by David Lowbridge

General Information

  • Scientific Name: Correlophus ciliatus
  • Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity
  • Size: 8–10 inches (including tail)
  • Temperament: Docile and easy to handle
  • Native Habitat: New Caledonia (tropical rainforest)

Housing

  • Enclosure Size:
    • Babies: A small plastic enclosure such as a jumping spider enclosure.
    • Juveniles: Minimum 10-gallon tank (vertically oriented).
    • Adults: 18x18x24 inches (approx. 20 gallons). Taller enclosures are ideal due to their arboreal nature.
  • Substrate:
    • There’s lots of choice for substrate, any reptile safe substrate that retains moisture is good for crested geckos.
  • Enrichment
    • Provide plenty of climbing options: branches, vines, and artificial or live plants.
    • Include hiding spots and ledges to mimic their natural environment.
  • Ventilation:
    • Ensure the enclosure has adequate airflow, with a mesh or well-ventilated top.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature Range:
    • Daytime: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
    • Nighttime: 65–72°F (18–22°C).
  • Heating:
    • Use a low-wattage heat source if room temperature drops below recommended levels. Avoid heat rocks.
  • Humidity:
    • 60–80%, maintained with daily misting. Allow for a brief drying-out period between misting sessions.
    • Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity.
  • Lighting:
    • UVB lighting is optional but recommended for overall health. Ensure there are shaded areas to prevent overexposure.

Diet

  • Staple Diet:
    • Commercial crested gecko diet (CGD) like Pangea or Repashy.
  • Supplements:
    • Dust insects (if provided) with calcium and vitamin D3 powder.
  • Feeder Insects:
    • Offer gut-loaded crickets, mealworms or isopods once or twice a week as a treat.
  • Water:
    • Spray daily.

Handling

  • Temperament:
    • Crested geckos are generally docile and tolerate handling well.
  • Tips for Handling:
    • Let them “walk” hand-to-hand rather than gripping them tightly.
    • Limit handling sessions to 10–15 minutes to avoid stress.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Spot-clean daily (remove waste and uneaten food).
  • Deep clean the enclosure every 4 weeks, replacing substrate and disinfecting surfaces with reptile-safe products.
